Codex CLI 0.161.0 makes GPT-6.1 Sol the default model

score days from release to default: 8

Codex CLI 0.161.0, released October 7, sets GPT-6.1 Sol as the default in the bundled and Amazon Bedrock catalogs, and widens what an approved filesystem escalation can write.

What changed

Codex CLI 0.161.0, released October 7, makes GPT-6.1 Sol the default model in the bundled and Amazon Bedrock catalogs. OpenAI released gpt-6.1-sol on September 29 at $2 in and $10 out per million tokens for prompts up to 272K input tokens. The models page calls GPT-6 Sol the previous Sol model. The same release lets an approved filesystem escalation grant broader write access while keeping denied reads and network restrictions, and background tasks keep the permissions of the turn that started them.

Why it matters if you ship with an agent

Type /model: if you never pinned one, you are now on GPT-6.1 Sol. Pin it in config.toml if the old behaviour was the point. On Enterprise and Edu it stays off until an administrator enables it, and Free and Go are not included at launch. Then re-read your approval prompts. "Approve" on a filesystem escalation covers more than it did last week.
