Gemini 3.1 Flash Image shuts down October 29

score days of notice: 23

Google deprecated gemini-3.1-flash-image on October 6 and shuts it down on October 29, 2026. Nano Banana 2.1 is the replacement and is GA now.

What changed

On October 6 Google made gemini-nano-banana-2.1, an update to Nano Banana 2, generally available. Google says it keeps Flash-level speed and cost and improves visual quality, prompt adherence, multi-turn character consistency, text rendering and wide and panoramic ratios (1:4, 4:1, 1:8, 8:1) at 1K, 2K and 4K. The same entry deprecates gemini-3.1-flash-image and sets its shutdown for October 29, 2026.

Why it matters if you ship with an agent

Grep your repo for the old model id. Anything still calling gemini-3.1-flash-image stops working on October 29, and the agent that picked that id in July will not warn you. Swap it to gemini-nano-banana-2.1, rerun whatever tests cover image output, and check sizes and ratios in the results, since the wide ones are new.
